Regarding welding related to pressure equipment and pressure piping, the applicable laws and regulations (standards) require that the welding methods be conducted and performed using the welding procedure specification (WPS) confirmed in advance. Welding procedure includes welding method, base metal type, welding rod type, temperature of preheating, and stress relief method, and the type of shielding gas. WPS may also be required when welding non-pressure-resistant parts such as welding and hooks and lugs of pressure-resistant parts to pressure-resistant parts.

WELDING PROCEDURE SPECIFICATION (WPS)
Describes the weld shape, materials, details of the welding method, and other specifications. The welder will perform welding in accordance with these specifications.

WELDING PROCEDURE QUALIFICATION RECORD (PQR)
By checking the characteristics (strength) of the weld zone, it was recorded that there was no problem in the welding procedure method.
This PQR is used to support the integrity of the actual WPS.

The objective of WPS/PQR is to determine that the weld proposed for construction is of a competence with the properties required for its intended use.
This assumes that the welder and welding operator performing the welding procedure qualification test are skilled workers.
In other words, the Welding Procedure Certification Test establishes the characteristics of the weld, and does not establish the skills of the welder or welding operator.
